Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy: A Modern Approach to Mental Health

Where ancient wisdom meets evidence-based mental health care.

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have worked with psilocybin mushrooms for healing, insight, and spiritual growth. Today, Colorado stands at the forefront of bringing this tradition into regulated therapeutic practice.

With the passage of the Natural Medicine Act (Proposition 122) in 2022 and the opening of licensed healing centers in 2025, Psychedelic Therapy Den is proud to offer psilocybin-supported services under full regulatory compliance with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, creating a safe, structured, and intentional setting for healing.

The Therapeutic Potential of Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms)

Traditional mental health treatments do not always go far enough.

Many people reach a point where standard medications or talk therapy feel limited, leaving them stuck in persistent emotional patterns or unresolved symptoms. Psilocybin-assisted therapy offers a fundamentally different approach, one rooted in natural medicine and supported by a growing body of clinical research.

Studies funded by the National Institutes of Health have shown promising outcomes for psilocybin in areas such as treatment-resistant depression, addiction, and psychological distress related to serious illness. At Psychedelic Therapy Den, we have seen how responsibly guided psilocybin experiences, conducted within Colorado’s regulatory framework, can help individuals access insight, emotional relief, and a renewed sense of wellbeing.

The Science Behind the Medicine

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring, non-habit-forming psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms.

When used in a therapeutic setting, psilocybin temporarily alters patterns of consciousness in ways that may support emotional insight, expanded awareness, and meaningful self-reflection. Experiences often include changes in mood, perception, and thought patterns. A typical session lasts between two and six hours, depending on dosage, setting, and individual physiology.

Modern scientific interest in psilocybin expanded after a landmark 2006 study at Johns Hopkins University demonstrated both its safety profile and the potential for lasting positive effects following a single guided experience. Since then, research has continued worldwide, examining applications for depression, trauma-related symptoms, substance use disorders, and anxiety, particularly in individuals facing serious illness.

Prioritizing Your Well-Being

Guiding someone through an expanded state of consciousness requires clinical skill, presence, and a strong commitment to safety.

At Psychedelic Therapy Den, your physical and emotional wellbeing guide every aspect of care. Michael P. Biggans, JD/MS, LPC/LCPF, along with all collaborating facilitators, holds active licensure with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies and brings extensive training in trauma-informed and psychedelic-assisted therapy.

Clinical research indicates that psilocybin has a strong safety profile when administered in a structured and supervised environment. However, certain mental health histories, particularly psychotic spectrum disorders, may make psilocybin inappropriate. We encourage all prospective clients to consult their physician regarding medical conditions, medications, or concerns about suitability.

Determining If This Path Suits You

Emerging research suggests that psilocybin-assisted therapy may support healing across a range of emotional, psychological, and psychosomatic concerns.

Clinical studies and practitioner experience indicate potential benefits for persistent depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, substance dependence, and stress-related physical conditions such as headaches or digestive concerns. These experiences are often connected to unresolved emotional patterns or chronic nervous system activation. Beyond symptom relief, many clients report increased clarity, emotional openness, spiritual insight, and long-term shifts in perspective.

Psilocybin-assisted therapy is not appropriate for everyone. We conduct a thorough intake and screening process to determine whether this approach aligns with your goals, health history, and current supports. In certain cases, written medical clearance from a physician is required. This reflects our commitment to ethical, responsible, and client-centered care.

Our Psychedelic Therapy Practice

Comprehensive Psilocybin Therapy in Colorado

Psychedelic Therapy Den offers full-spectrum psilocybin-assisted therapy, including preparation, guided psilocybin sessions, and post-session integration. Services are available in both individual and group formats, allowing clients to choose the structure that best supports their goals.

Individual Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy

Individual sessions provide the highest level of personalized care and therapeutic attunement. In a one-on-one setting, preparation, the psilocybin experience, and integration are paced around your personal history, emotional needs, and nervous system capacity.

This format is especially supportive for those working with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, or major life transitions. With continuous therapeutic presence, clients are able to explore complex emotional material in a private and clinically grounded environment.

Group Psilocybin Ceremonies and Guided Sessions

Group psilocybin experiences offer a different but equally powerful pathway. In a professionally facilitated group setting, participants benefit from shared intention, relational insight, and the experience of being witnessed in a safe and supportive community.

Group sessions are well suited for individuals seeking connection, creative or spiritual exploration, or a more accessible entry into psychedelic work. Small group formats allow for individualized support while also fostering collective reflection and shared growth. Sessions may be themed or open-ended, depending on the goals of the group.

What to Expect

Your therapeutic journey unfolds through collaboration between you and your facilitator. Each experience is intentionally structured and uniquely tailored.

Initial Consultation

Begin with a no-cost exploratory call with lead clinician Michael P. Biggans. This conversation allows space for questions, discussion of goals, and determination of whether psilocybin-assisted therapy is an appropriate next step. If you choose to proceed, you will be matched with a licensed facilitator aligned with your needs.

Preparation Phase

You will meet with your facilitator at least once, and up to three times if you prefer, prior to your psilocybin session. These meetings explore your personal history, clarify intentions, and establish a foundation of trust and safety.  Preparation sessions may be conducted in person or remotely.

Session Day

On the day of your experience, you will arrive at our center and be oriented to the space. Dosage, duration, and comfort protocols will already be agreed upon. During the session, facilitators provide continuous support to ensure safety, containment, and emotional care.

Integration Work

Integration sessions help you process your experience and translate insights into meaningful changes in daily life. Some clients choose to engage in ongoing integration or multiple therapeutic journeys, depending on their goals and needs.

It is important to note that Psychedelic Therapy Den offers traditional facilitation services, as well as more advanced Internal Family Systems/Exposure & Response-based clinical guidance for individuals dealing with more complex presentations, symptoms or histories.

Legal and Medical Framework

Colorado’s natural medicine regulations differ from traditional medical models. A prescription or physician referral is not required to access psilocybin-assisted therapy. State law does require preparation work with a licensed facilitator prior to any psilocybin use.

Certain medical conditions require documented physician approval before services can be provided. These include histories of psychotic episodes, current use of antipsychotic medications or specific antidepressants, and significant cardiovascular or kidney conditions. These requirements are mandated by law and exist to protect client safety.
